Split group expenses and see who owes whom

How it works

1. Open Expense Splitter in the Room and share the Room link with everyone who was part of the spending.
2. Set the currency label for the Room, then have each person add the expenses they paid for, choosing who each bill covers.
3. Split a bill evenly, or switch to shares when people are not splitting it equally.
4. Read the net balance for each person and the settle-up list, then record the transfers as they are actually paid.

Why use it in a Free4Chat Room

Use it for the ordinary cases where one person puts their card down and everybody else needs to square up: a shared dinner, a night out, a birthday present bought between friends, a taxi, a team lunch, or the running costs of a trip while the trip is happening. Because it lives in the Room, the people who spent the money are the people looking at the numbers, and a disagreement can be settled by talking it through rather than by forwarding a spreadsheet.

Limits & privacy

The arithmetic is exact. Amounts are whole minor units—cents, pence, yen—from the entry form to the balance sheet, and a bill that does not divide evenly hands the leftover units out deterministically, so two people looking at the same expense see identical shares. The currency is a single label set by the host, with no exchange-rate conversion. Nothing connects to a bank, no payment is processed, no receipt is scanned, and nothing is kept after the Room ends.

Frequently asked questions

Does it connect to a bank or move money?

No. There is no bank connection, no card, no payment processing and no payment app integration. The App does arithmetic and records what people tell it; moving the money is something the group does itself.

Can I scan a receipt?

No. There is no receipt scanning, no OCR and no image upload. You type the amount yourself, and the ledger is the only place it goes.

Can I convert between currencies?

No. The currency is a single label for the Room, and there is no exchange-rate conversion anywhere. If a group spends in two currencies, settle each in its own session. A currency without minor units, such as yen, is never shown with decimals.

How are amounts that do not divide evenly handled?

The remainder is handed out one minor unit at a time, in order of who is owed the largest fraction, with ties going to the lowest participant id. Splitting 10.00 three ways gives 3.34, 3.33 and 3.33, and the parts always add back to exactly 10.00 with no floating-point drift.

Can somebody edit or delete my expense?

No. An expense belongs to the person who added it, and an edit or deletion from anybody else is refused. If somebody's entry is wrong, that is a conversation in the Room rather than a silent overwrite.

Does the settle-up list use the fewest possible transfers?

It is a short list, not a guaranteed minimum. It pairs the largest creditor with the largest debtor until everybody reaches zero. The result is deterministic and usually short, but it is not guaranteed to use the minimum number of transfers.

Is this a trip expense tracker?

It is a temporary shared settlement session, not a persistent tracker. There is no multi-day ledger, no dates on entries, no saved history and no account to return to—once the Room ends, the ledger is gone. It is built to settle up now, not to keep books over time.
